My concern is not about operating the new shifter just that I hear horror stories about ratchet shifters stretching cables and blowing the trans or front exit cables constantly burning up on headers.

The reason you would use one is mainly for racing ( or looks i spose), but in ratchet mode you pull the shifter back, then back, then back again to reach 1st gear.
